Shoremen Also Race Two Crews in Varsity Four
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — The Washington College men's rowing team opened its spring regatta schedule at the Murphy Cup today on the Schuylkill River. Lee Potter and Grayson Searles finished third overall in the varsity pair and the Shoremen also had a pair of crews race in the varsity four.
How It Happened
- Potter and Searles finished second in their heat of the varsity pair in 7:32.46 to advance to the final. North Carolina "B" won the heat in 7:29.58, while Lafayette "A" was third in 7:35.35.
- In the final, Potter and Searles placed third of six boats in 8:20.85. North Carolina "B" won the race in 8:08.29, North Carolina "A" was second in 8:12.38, Loyola fourth in 8:28.08, Lafayette "A" fifth in 8:34.44, and North Carolina "C" sixth in 8:39.48. The bronze medal was the first for the Shoremen at the Murphy Cup since 2011.
- Washington's "A" boat in the varsity four placed third in its heat in 7:05.18. North Carolina "A" won the race in 6:43.65, Fordham was second in 6:53.38, Drexel fourth in 7:06.32, and Lafayette "B" fifth in 7:26.75. The Shoremen "A" boat's heat time was ninth best among 20 total crews, but only the winner of each of the four heats plus the next two fastest heat times overall advanced to the final in the event.
- Washington's "B" boat in the varsity four finished third in its heat in 7:31.91. Loyola "A" won the heat in 7:04.54, Michigan was second in 7:24.04, and Susquehanna was fourth in 8:09.23.
