PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — The Washington College men's rowing team opened its spring racing season today at the Murphy Cup on the Schulylkill River in Philadelphia. The Shoremen's novice four advanced to the final in its event to highlight the day for Washington.
How It Happened
- The novice four was third in its heat in 8:09.06. Temple won the heat in 7:16.04, while Lafayette was second in 7:43.85. Susquehanna did not finish the race. The top three boats in each heat of the men's novice four advanced to the final. The Shoremen placed sixth of six boats in the final, although no time was recorded for them. Temple won the final in 6:49.00, Penn State was second in 6:56.03, Merchant Marine third in 7:20.22, Lafayette fourth in 7:26.53, and North Carolina fifth in 7:31.22
- The Shoremen's "A" boat in the varsity four finished second in its heat in 7:34.18. Virginia won the heat in 7:24.10, Delaware was third in 7:45.06, Loyola fourth in 7:50.70, and Fordham "B" fifth in 7:56.07. The winners of each of the four heats in the varsity four, plus the next fastest two times overall, advanced to the final. The Shoremen's second-place time was not fast enough to advance.
- The Shoremen's "B" boat in the varsity four was fourth in its heat in 7:53.61. Wesleyan won the heat in 7:16.56, St. Mary's was second in 7:19.20, and Pittsburgh third in 7:28.58.
