Shoremen Drop McDaniel, 9-5, in Centennial Opener

Shoremen Use 6-0 Run to Earn Victory

CHESTERTOWN, Md. -- Host Washington College scored six unanswered goals over a span of 34:22 to win its Centennial Conference men's lacrosse opener, 9-5, against visiting McDaniel College this afternoon on Kibler Field at Roy Kirby, Jr. Stadium. The Shoremen improved to 2-5 overall with the win, while the Green Terror dropped to 3-4 with the loss. 

The Shoremen got on the board just 2:12 into the game when senior attackman Stephen Luck (Catonsville, Md./Boys' Latin) scored off an assist from sophomore attackman Owen Evans (West Chester, Pa./Reed Henderson). The Green Terror evened the score with 7:46 left in the first as Calvin Fleagle scored after scooping up a ground ball behind the goal. Fleagle then fed Timothy McNichol for a goal with 4:27 left to put McDaniel ahead, 2-1. The Green Terror lead grew to 3-1 courtesy of a Sean Brett goal off a Pat Bivons assist with 1:50 to go in the first quarter. 

Luck cut the deficit to 3-2 with a bounce-shot goal by Luck with 9:14 remaining in the second quarter, but Fleagle got that goal back with his second tally of the afternoon with 6:15 left in the quarter. Freshman attackman Tyler Powers (Duxbury, Mass./Dusbury) scooped up a ground ball and scored with 28.3 seconds to go in the quarter, slicing the deficit to 4-3 before halftime. 

The Shoremen pulled even at 4-4 when Evans scored off an assist from senior attackman Sam Birnbaum (Melville, N.Y./Half Hollows Hills East) 9:28 to play in the third quarter. That goal would prove to be the only one of the third quarter. 

Senior midfielder David Pim (Gaithersburg, Md./Heights School) put the Shoremen in front, 5-4, with a goal off a Birnbaum assist with 10:19 left in the fourth. Luck then netted his third goal of the game, off an assist from Powers just 52 seconds later as the Shoremen took their first two-goal lead of the contest at 6-4. Washington continued to extend the lead when sophomore midfielder Jon Heneberry scored off an assist from Powers with 8:15 to go. Evans tacked on Washington's eighth goal of the afternoon when scored an extra-man goal off a feed from Luck with 3:37 to go. Bivons scored its first goal in over two quarters of play off an assist from Troy Becker with 1:43 left. Birnbaum provided the final margin with a goal with 17.9 seconds remaining. 

Luck finished with three goals and an assist in the win for the Shoremen, while Evans had two goals and one assist and Birnbaum and Powers tallied one goal and two assists each. Sophomore goalie Jackson Szurley (Lincoln, R.I./Moses Brown) made seven saves, while junior defenseman Brad Wollman (Woodbine, Md./Glenelg Country School) tallied five caused turnovers. 

For McDaniel, Fleagle's two goals and one assist paced the offense. Eric Ritchie made 10 saves in goal.

The Shoremen finished the game with a 47-26 advantage in shots, including a hefty 40-14 advantage after the first quarter. 

The Shoremen are back in action Wednesday with a 7:00 p.m. Centennial Conference game at Haverford.
