Hughes Scores Game-High Three Goals in Loss
SALISBURY, Md. -- Second-ranked host Salisbury University took a 7-3 halftime lead en route to a 12-7 win over visiting seventh-ranked Washington College in the annual "War on the Shore" for the Charles B. Clark Cup between the two men's lacrosse rivals. The Sea Gulls improved to 8-0 on the season with the win, while the Shoremen fell to 5-1.
The Sea Gulls struck first, just before the midway point of the first half as Luke Phipps scored off a feed from Brandon Kendrick with 7:39 to play in the period. Washington evened the score just 1:23 later on a goal by junior midfielder Grant Hughes (Alexandria, Va./St. Stephen's & St. Agnes). Salisbury regained the lead with 3:52 left in the first on a Greg Korvin tally and pushed the lead to 3-1 when Korvin scored again with just two seconds left in the opening quarter.
Washington opened the second-quarter scoring when sophomore midfielder David McBrien (Bel Air, Md./Calvert Hall) netted his first goal of the season with 11:16 on the clock, but Brady Dashiell answered for Salisbury with 9:57 left to increase the margin back to two goals at 4-2. The Sea Gulls increased their lead to 5-2 when Jesse Rabishaw scored in transition off feed from Zeke Smith with 7:54 remaining in the second. Senior attackman Jim Cusick (Fallston, Md./Calvert Hall) then netted an extra-man goal for the Shoremen just 27 seconds later off an assist from senior midfielder Hunter Nowicki (Baltimore, Md./Franklin), but Salisbury again went ahead by three goals when Thomas Cirillo scored off a Phipps assist with 3:17 to play before the intermission to make ti 6-3. The Sea Gull lead grew to four goals 63 seconds later when Rhett DePol found the back of the net off a Sean Fitzgerald pass to give Salisbury a 7-3 lead at halftime.
Junior attackman Stephen Luck (Catonsville, Md./Boys' Latin) scored for the Shoremen just 1:08 into the third quarter, but Korvin found Mike Kane with 11:42 left to give the Sea Gulls an 8-4 lead. Salisbury extended that advantage when Fitzgerald scored an extra-man goal off an assist from Korvin with 6:24 to go in the third and Donovan Lange scored with 4:51 on the clock, increasing the lead to 10-4. Cirillo tacked on another Salisbury goal with 2:18 left in the quarter as the Sea Gulls took an 11-4 advantage into the fourth.
Washington stopped the run of four straight Salisbury goals when Nowicki scored with 12:39 left in the game, but the Sea Gulls countered when Fitzgerald found Kane with 9:19 left to make it an even dozen for Salisbury on the afternoon. The score remaining 12-5 until Hughes scored for Washington with 2:52 to play and netted another goal just 23 seconds later off an assist from Luck to provide the final margin.
Korvin led the Sea Gulls with two goals and two assists, while Cirillo and Kane added two goals each and Fitzgerald finished with one goal and two assists. Alex Taylor was outstanding in goal for Salisbury, making 15 saves.
Hughes led the Washington offense with his game-high three goals. Junior midfielder Michael Trapp (White Plains, N.Y./White Plains) was outstanding on face-offs in the loss for the Shoremen, going 17-for-23 with 13 ground balls. Senior goalie Ted DiSalvo (Boca Raton, Fla./Spanish River) started the game for Washington, but made three saves while allowing 11 goals in 42:56. Junior Andrew Bolland (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Mountain Lakes) entered the game late in the third quarter and made two saves while allowing one goal the rest of the way.
Washington held a 42-33 advantage in shots in the game.
The Shoremen return to action Saturday with their Centennial Conference opener, a 1:00 p.m. game at McDaniel.
