CHESTERTOWN, MD -- The 18th-ranked Washington College men's lacrosse team has received an at-large bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament. The Shoremen, who will host 10th-ranked Goucher, in a first-round game Wednesday, will be making their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2008 and their 29th overall.
The Shoremen will carry an 11-5 record into Wednesday's game. Washington fell to Dickinson in the Centennial Conference Championship, 11-6, Sunday, but turned in a 7-1 record during the conference's regular season to finish in first place in the league standings.
Goucher, champions of the Landmark Conference, has won 14 consecutive games and brings a 17-1 record into Wednesday's game. The Gophers defeated the Shoremen, 8-6, when the two teams met in Chestertown back on February 25th.
The winner of Wednesday's game will play at top-ranked Salisbury on Saturday in the second round. The Sea Gulls were one of four teams in the 28-team field to receive a first-round bye.
In the Shoremen's last NCAA Division III Tournament appearance in 2008, Washington defeated Lynchburg, 12-9, before falling to Gettysburg, 12-5. The Shoremen won the NCAA Division III National Championship in 1998.
Wednesday's game will start at 4:00 p.m. Admission prices are $5 for the general public, $2 for students with college ID, and free for children 12 and under. No advanced admission will be sold. No re-entry into Roy Kirby, Jr. Stadium once inside will be allowed.
