Kaski, Cusick Score Two Goals Each in Loss

CHESTERTOWN, MD – Visiting Ursinus College built a late two-goal lead and held on for a 9-8 win over host Washington College in a Centennial Conference men's lacrosse game tonight on Kibler Field at Roy Kirby, Jr. Stadium.  The Bears improved to 8-2 overall and 3-1 in conference play with the win, while the Shoremen fell to 4-5 and 2-3 with the loss.

Ursinus struck first in the contest as Brian Weil fired in a shot with 8:08 left in the first quarter. The Shoremen evened the score when sophomore midfielder Patrick Coyle (Reisterstown, MD/Calvert Hall) scored off a feed from sophomore attackman Bennett Cord (Gaithersburg, MD/Gaithersburg) with 3:48 left, but the Bears answered on a goal by Ernie Constantine off an assist from Weil 33 seconds later. Washington evened the score before the end of the quarter on a goal by senior midfielder Shane Kaski (Mosley, VA/Midlothian) off an assist from junior attackman Billy Stafford (White Hall, MD/Hereford) with just 26 seconds left in the quarter.

Washington took its first lead of the game with 11:17 to go in the second quarter as Cord scored off an assist from sophomore attackman Glen Tompkins (Manhasset, NY/Manhasset). Neither team would score again until Ursinus got a goal from Dylan Spangenberg with 2:25 left in the half and another from Pat Gillen off an assist from Mike Bloom 30 seconds later to pull in front, 4-3. Kaski again evened the score in the waning seconds of a quarter, scoring off an assist from Cord with just four seconds left before intermission to make it 4-4.

Ursinus took the lead on a goal by Taylor Allen off an Ocampo assist with 11:12 leftin the third, but Washington answered with a goal by freshman midfielder Hunter Nowicki (Baltimore, MD/Franklin) with 10:04 left to even the score at 5-5. Junior attackman Tom Rixey (Virginia Beach, VA/Norfolk Academy) gave Washington its final lead of the game with a goal with 8:33 left to make it 6-5. Ursinus ended the quarter with a goal by Ocampo with 5:02 remaining and another by Weil off an Allen assist with 3:02 to go to pull in front, 7-6.

Allen and Weil each had two goals and one assist for the Bears, while Bloom had one goal and two assists. Ocampo added one goal and one assist. 

Josh Baker made 14 saves and scooped up eight ground balls in goal for Ursinus, while junior goalie Peter Stewart (Annapolis, MD/St. Mary's) made 11 saves for the Shoremen.

Washington held a 42-31 advantage in shots in the game and turned the ball over 11 times to the Bears' 21. Ursinus won 12 of the game's 21 face-offs and held a 37-20 advantage in ground balls.

The Shoremen return to action Saturday with a 4:00 p.m. Centennial Conference home game against Dickinson.
