Nittany Lions Have Little Trouble Versus Shoremen, 11-2

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Penn State-Berks scored seven times in the bottom of the first inning to take control of the game en route to an 11-2 win over Washington College in a non-conference baseball game at Pelicans Stadium at the Ripken Experience.  The Shoremen fall to 3-1 on the season.

The Nittany Lions took a 1-0 lead with nobody out when Dylan Gallagher singled in Nick Zipay and the next hitter Zachary Reis doubled home both Luke Erb and Tom Grablewski to give Penn State-Berks a 3-0 cushion.  With two away, Keeanu Erb brought home Gallagher on a base hit to make it 4-0 and Zipay capped the seven-run outburst with a three-run single that scored Reis, Troy Salerno and Keeanu Erb.

PSU-Berks scored once in the last of the second to make it 8-0 and three times in the bottom half of the fourth to make it 11-0.  Washington got a run in the top of the fifth and in the top of the ninth to cap the scoring.  Senior Kyle Mikula (Stafford, Va./Colonial Ridge) homered in the ninth for the Shoremen.

For the Nittany Lions, who had 14 in the win, got three hits from Gallagher and Grablewski and a pair of hits from Luke Erb, Keeanu Erb and Zipay.  Reis and Zipay each had three RBI, while Gallagher had a pair of RBI.  Scoring twice for Penn State-Berks was Luke Erb, Gallagher, Grablewski and Zipay.  On the hill, Kyle Hartman got the win and is 1-0 as he went the entire way.  He struck out three, walked nobody and allowed a pair of earned runs.

For the Shoremen, junior Garrett Richardello (Coventry, Conn./East Catholic) and freshman Ryan Donnelly (Novi, Mich./Brother Rice) each had two hits as the team had nine.  On the hill, junior pitcher Sam McGovern (Middletown, N.J./Red Bank Catholic) took the loss and falls to 0-1.

The Shoremen conclude their time in Myrtle Beach tomorrow morning at 9:00 a.m. against Penn College of Technology at Crosley Field.
