Diplomats Topple Shoremen, 14-4

Baquer Three Hits and Two RBI; Thomas Two Hits and Two RBI

CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Visiting Franklin & Marshall scored at least one run in seven of the contest's nine innings en route to a 14-4 win over host Washington College in a Centennial Conference baseball game on Wednesday afternoon at Athey Baseball Park.  The Diplomats improve to 12-17 overall and 4-7 in the Centennial, while the Shoremen drop to 12-16 and 3-8 respectively.

F&M scored twice in the top half of the second inning to take two-run lead.  The game's first run came when Avery Attinson singled to left-center to score Matt Mezansky from third.  The guests made 2-0 when Reed Williams scored from second just ahead of the throw on a base hit up the middle off the bat of Brett Poniros

The Diplomats scored three times in the top half of the third to take a 5-0 lead.  Joe Gallitto scored on a balk with the bases loaded with one out to make it 3-0 and Avery Attinson singled up the middle to drive in both Mezanksy and Pat Andrews to give the guests a five-run lead.

F&M scored once in the fourth, seventh and ninth innings, twice in the fifth and four times in the sixth to get to its 14 runs.  Washington scored twice in the bottom half of the eighth and ninth innings to get its four runs.

For the Diplomats, who had 21 hits, Mezansky went a perfect 6-for-6 at the dish and scored a game-best five runs.  Attinson went 2-for-4 with a game-high four RBI.  Reed Williams had three runs, two hits and a pair of RBI, while Will Benenson had three RBI and a pair of hits.  Poniros had two hits and two RBI, Rob Anderson tallied two hits, while Andrews scored twice.  On the mound, Will Hofmann got the win to improve to 1-0.  He went six innings, giving up only four hits and no runs en route to victory.

For the Shoremen, who had nine hits, got a three-hit and two RBI performance from sophomore outfielder Bryan Baquer (Woodbridge, Va./Osbourn Park) and a two-hit, two RBI effort from junior first baseman Dennis Thomas (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley).  Senior shortstop Nick Marinelli (Ellicott City, Md./Marriotts Ridge) score two runs for the hosts.  Sophomore pitcher Dan Jarrell (Alexandria, Va./West Potomac) took the loss and drops to 3-3 as he went 3 1/3 innings and gave up six earned runs.

The two teams will complete the home-and-home series on Friday at Franklin & Marshall in Lancaster, Pa.
