Connole Goes 3-for-5 in Loss
CHESTER, PA - Host Widener University topped visiting Washington College, 16-11, in a non-conference baseball game this afternoon in Chester, PA. The Pride improved to 16-6 with the win, while the Shoremen fell to 11-8 with the loss. The Shoremen lost despite pounding out 18 hits in the game; Widener had 15 hits of its own.
Widener took a 3-0 lead in the first inning when Tom DeAngelis led off the inning with a double and later scored on an error and Max McCarthy drove in a pair of runs with a two-out double. A two-run single by Dan Sieracki in the bottom of the second extended the Pride's lead to 5-0. An RBI double by Dennis Hocker ignited a six-run third inning for Widener, who took an 11-0 lead.
The Shoremen got on the board in the fourth when junior John Rolewicz (Bear, DE/Salesianum) led off the inning with a single and later scored on a double play. Widener tacked on another run in the bottom of the frame, but the Shoremen got two back in the top of the fifth on an RBI single by freshman Nick Marinelli (Ellicott City, MD/Marriotts Ridge) and an RBI double by sophomore Tyler Cotterell (Lincroft, NJ/Middletown South) to make it 12-3. The Pride scored again in the bottom of the inning to make it 13-3. An RBI single by sophomore Sean Connole (Mt. Airy, MD/St. John's Catholic) in the sixth trimmed the margin to 13-4, but an RBI single by Sean Saverio and a two-run double by Andrew Gehringer in the bottom of the inning made it 16-4. In the top of the righty, Marinelli drove in a run on a fielder's choice and freshman Liam Aquino (Ellicott City, MD/Howard) hit a two-run duble to cut the lead to 16-7. Connole and Aquino each added a two-run single in the top of the ninth to close the gap to 16-11, but the Pride held on for the win.
Sieracki, Gerhringer, McCarthy, and Hocker each had two hits for Widener. Sieracki added three RBI, Gehringer had two RBI, McCarthy had two RBI and a run scored, and Hocker had an RBI and two runs scored. Brandon McClockey got the win for Widener, allowing three runs - one of them earned - on two walks and seven hits.
For the Shoremen, Connole went 3-for-5 with three RBI and a run scored, while Marinelli, Aquino, Cotterell, junior Dwight Wilcox (Annapolis, MD/St. Mary's), and freshman Jon Mahaffey (Sykesville, MD/Century) each had two hits. Marinelli added two RBI and two runs scored, Aquino drove in four runs, Cotterell had an RBI, Wilcox scored a run, and Mahaffey scored a pair of runs.
The Shoremen return to action Friday with a 3:30 p.m. Centennial Conference game at McDaniel.
