Kearney-Argow Fans Career-Best Seven in Win
DOVER, DE - Freshman pitcher Joe Kearney-Argow (Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape) struck out a career-high seven batters in six innings of work as visiting Washington College nipped host Wesley, 5-4, in a non-conference baseball game this afternoon at Bob Reed Field. The Shoremen improved to 15-12 with the win, while the Wolverines fell to 18-13 with the loss.
Down 3-1 entering the top of the fifth, the Shoremen scored four times to take the lead at 5-3. Sophomore John Rolewicz (Bear, DE/Salesianum) singled in fellow classmate Ben Jardot (McLean, VA/Flint Hill School) to cut the Wesley lead to 3-2. Sophomore Ryan Normoyle (Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape) put WC up 4-3 on a two-run single to right to chase in freshman Sean Connole (Mt. Airy, MD/St. John's Catholic) and Rolewicz. The final run of the inning happened when freshman Kyle Aldrich (Warren Hills, NJ/Watchung Hills Regional) drew a bases loaded walk that scored senior Matt Boucher (Alexandria, VA/Bishop Ireton).
Ryan Ziolkowski cut the Washington lead to 5-4 in the bottom of the eighth when he singled through the right side to plate Greg McKee with two away. The Wolverines had the tying run at third base, but senior Chris Keiper (Toms River, NJ/Monsignor Donovan) struck out Steve Perone to end the threat. Keiper would strike out two Wolverines in the ninth to retire the side in order to finish off the victory and record his seventh save of the year.
Wesley jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on a home run by Kevin Murphy to left field with two outs. Washington tied it at 1-1 in the top of the second when freshman Tyler Cotterell (Lincroft, NJ/Middletown South) plated Normoyle on an RBI groundout.
The Wolverines scored twice in the bottom of the fourth on solo blasts from Murphy and Tyler Burns to grab a 3-1 lead. For Murphy, it was his second longball of the afternoon.
For WC, Kearney-Argow in addition his career high seven strike outs, allowed just six hits and three runs in his six innings on the mound and improves to 3-2. At the plate, Connole, Normoyle and freshman Joe Willis (Mullica Hill, NJ/Kingsway Regional) all had two hits and Normoyle had two RBI.
Wesley's Murphy had two home runs, two hits and two RBI in the contest. Also picking up two hits for the hosts were Ziolkowski and Seth Hastings also tallied two hits. On the mound, DJ Keckler took the loss for Wesley and drops to 3-5.
The Shoremen return to action Saturday with a 12:30 p.m. Centennial Conference road double-header at Muhlenberg. One victory by WC will punch its ticket to the 2010 Centennial Conference Baseball Tournament and will qualify for the conference tournament for the first time.
