Sophomore Doubles in Game-Winner in Bottom of the Ninth
WINTER HAVEN, FL - Sophomore John Rolewicz (Bear, DE/Salesianum) doubled in the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Washington College baseball team a 3-2 win over Drew University this afternoon at Chain of Lakes Park in Winter Haven, FL, as part of the RussMatt Central Florida Baseball Invitational. The Shoremen improved to 2-3 with the win, while the Rangers fell to 0-4 with the loss.
Louis Gialanella hit an RBI single in the top of the second to give Drew a 1-0 lead, but WC sophomore Ryan Normoyle (Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape) evened things up with a home run in the bottom of the inning. Chris DelMaestro hit an RBI double for the Rangers in the top of the fifth to put the Rangers in front, 2-1. The Shoremen tied the score again in the bottom of the seventh when freshman Sean Connole (Mt. Airy, MD/St. John's Catholic), who started the game on the mound and moved to the designated hitter spot after six and two-thirds innings, hit an RBI single.
Connole would go on to score the winning run in the bottom of the ninth as he hit a one-out double. Rolewicz followed with his game-winning double to drive in Connole.
Connole got a no-decision on the mound, but pitched well, allowing two runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out six. Senior Chris Keiper (Toms River, NJ/Monsignor Donovan) got the win, allowing no runs on one hit and one walk while striking out two batters in two and one-third innings.
Normoyle was 3-for-4 at the plate for the Shoremen, hitting a double to go with his home run. Connole and Rolewicz had two hits each. Matt McGrath was 2-for-4 at the plate for Drew.
The Shoremen continue play in the RussMatt Baseball Central Florida Invitational tomorrow with a 9:00 a.m. game against Gordon in Winter Haven.
