Shoremen Find "Pot of Gold" Against Eagles

WC Posts St. Patrick's Day Sweep of Division I Team

GLEN BURNIE , MD - Senior Chris Smith (Catonsville, MD/Catonsville) tossed a complete game in game two and sophomore Shane Mattingly (Ellicott City, MD/Centennial) had a strong six-inning outing in game one as the Washington College baseball team swept Coppin State, 3-2, and 4-1, in a double-header this afternoon in Glen Burnie, MD. The game one win was the Shoremen's (5-3) first victory over a Division I team since a 7-1 win against Maryland-Eastern Shore in 1993.

The Shoremen scored all three of their game-one runs in the top of the fourth inning. Back-to-back singles by freshman Sean Connole (Mt. Airy, MD/St. John's Catholic) and sophomore John Rolewicz (Bear, DE/Salesianum) led off the inning for Washington. Two batters later, sophomore Ben Jardot (McLean, VA/Flint Hill School) drove Connole in with a single to left field. Sophomore Ryan Normoyle (Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape) then drove in Rolewicz with a double. Senior Brian Kramer (Fairfax, VA/W.T. Woodson) plated Normoyle with a single to left center to drive in Normoyle after Jardot was picked off.

Coppin State got two runs back in the top of the fifth on a triple to right center by Dan Gleiberman. Mattingly limited the damage with a strikeout to end the inning.

Mattingly pitched six innings of four-hit ball in the win. He struck out six batters while walking four. Senior Chris Keiper (Toms River, NJ/Monsignor Donovan) got the save, striking out out two batters in a hitless seventh.

In game two, Jim Vagnier scored on a balk in the bottom of the third to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead. The Shoremen evened the score in the top of the fourth when Normoyle scored on a wild pitch. In the top of the fifth, Washington took a 2-1 lead Rolewicz doubled to right field to drive in freshman Joe Willis (Mullica Hill, NJ/Kingsway Regional).

Washington added a pair of runs in the top of the seventh. Rolewicz doubled to right center to drove in Connole and later scored on a single to center field by Normoyle.

Smith allowed four hits and no walks while striking out four in the win. His one run allowed was unearned. Normoyle went 4-for-4 with a double, a run scored, and an RBI in the win. Rolewicz was 2-for-2 with two doubles, two RBI, a run scored, and two walks.

The Shoremen return to action Saturday with their home opener, a 12:00 p.m. non-conference game against Frostburg State.
