2008 CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Senior libero Arielle Brown (Merion, PA/Lower Merion) had a team-best 14 digs to set the Washington College school record in digs, but the Shorewomen fell to visiting Swarthmore, 3-0 (26-24, 25-12, 25-18), in Centennial Conference volleyball action on Wednesday evening at the Cain Athletic Center. The Garnet improve to 5-12 overall and 1-1 in the Centennial, while the Shorewomen are 9-11 and 0-3 respectively. Brown achieved the school record in the third set with Washington trailing 15-7 on an attack attempt by Swarthmore's Hillary Santana. It was her 11th dig of the contest and her 1,177th career dig as she surpassed Beverly Diaz, who played from 1991-94. In the first set, Washington led 24-23, but Swarthmore won the last three points to grab the first set 26-24. Kearney Bangs had the tying and go ahead kill for the Garnet. An attack error by the Shorewomen ended the opening set. In the second set, the Shorewomen won the first point, but the guests won the next six points to take control of the set on their way to a 25-12 win. The third set saw Swarthmore grab the first five points as the Garnet jumped out to a 24-14 lead before Washington made one final charge. The Shorewomen scored the next four points, but a kill by Genny Pezzola ended the set and the match. Swarthmore got double-doubles from Pezzola and Jen Wang. Pezzola had a match-best 13 kills and 11 digs, while Wang had a match-high 17 digs and 12 kills. Bangs led all players with 26 assists. Washington got a double-double from junior setter Caitlin Ward (Wantagh, NY/Holy Trinity) with 16 assists and 10 digs. Her 16 assists led all Washington players. Senior outside hitter Chelsea Crum (Newark, DE/Charter School of Wilmington) had 12 digs on the evening for the Shorewomen. Junior middle hitter Kelli Canada (Midlothian, VA/James River) had four blocks to lead all participants. Washington College returns to action on Saturday with a tri-match. Washington hosts Marymount at 11:00 a.m. and Rowan at 3:00 p.m. Marymount and Rowan will play at 1:00 p.m. |
