2008 STEVENSON, MD -- The Washington College volleyball team opened the 2008 season by winning two of its three matches at a quadrangular match hosted by Stevenson University this afternoon in Stevenson, MD. The Shorewomen downed Cedar Crest in their first match in four sets, winning, 25-17, 19-25, 25-22, 25-10. The Shorewomen then fell to Stevenson, 25-16, 25-20, 18-25, 25-21, in their second match before defeating Wesley, 25-13, 23-25, 25-22, 25-12. The matches were the first Washington has played within the NCAA's new 25-point scoring format. Junior setter Caitlin Ward (Wantagh, NY/Holy Trinity) racked up 24 assists, seven aces, and 14 digs against Cedar Crest. Ward served five aces in a row early in the first set. Washington served a total of 22 aces as a team in the match. Senior libero Arielle Brown (Merion, PA/Lower Merion) had 17 digs against Cedar Crest, while senior outside hitter Chelsea Crum (Newark, DE/Charter School of Wilmington) tallied 10. Junior middle hitter Kelli Canada (Midlothian, VA/Middle River) pounded down a team-best 13 kills against Stevenson, while Ward had 26 assists and Brown had 23 digs. Crum contributed 11 digs, while freshman Erin Ficca (West Chester, PA/Bishop Shanahan) served five aces. The Shorewomen's best hitting performance of the day came against Wesley as Washington pounded down 49 kills against 19 errors in 105 attempts (.286). Crum tallied 13 kills in the match, while freshman outside hitter Alyssa Forget (River Vale, NJ/Pascack Valley) added 12. Sophomore middle hitter Maria Whitman (Galesville, MD/Southern) had six kills and no errors in 11 attempts. Ward finished the match with 40 assists. Washington also served 15 aces as a team against the Wolverines. The Shorewomen will compete in the Gettysburg Battlefield Classic next Friday and Saturday. The Shorewomen will play Eastern at 5:00 p.m. and Randolph-Macon at 7:00 p.m. on the tournament's first day. WASHINGTON/CEDAR CREST BOX SCORE |
