27, 2008 CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Washington College gained a split at the 33rd annual Penny Fall Classic on Saturday at the Cain Athletic Center. Washington (9-10) beat Albright (2-15) in the finale, 3-0 (25-15, 25-21, 25-12), while falling to Mary Washington in the opening match, 3-0 (25-16, 25-15, 25-17). The middle match saw Mary Washington (11-6) down Albright, 3-0 (25-11, 25-13, 25-16). In the final match of the day, the Shorewomen trailed Albright 14-10 in the second set before closing out the match on a 15-7 run to score a 25-21 win. Senior outside hitter Chelsea Crum (Newark, DE/Charter School of Wilmington) had the final point on a kill. In the third and final set, the Lions got it to 10-9, before the hosts closed out the match on a 15-3 run. Freshman outside hitter Alyssa Forget (River Vale, NJ/Pascack Valley) tallied the final point of the match on a kill. For the Shorewomen, senior Arielle Brown (Merion, PA/Lower Merion) had a team-best 15 digs, while Crum and Forget each delivered a match-high eight kills. Junior setter Caitlin Ward (Wantagh, NY/Holy Trinity) had 19 assists. For the Lions, Kelly Nicodemus had a match-best 20 digs. It was the Shorewomen's first victory over the Lions since a 2-1 win in 1994. In the opening match, Mary Washington used a .292 hitting percentage to sweep the host Shorewomen. In the third and final set, the Eagles had 12 kills and zero errors on 24 attempts. Katie Shiflett led all players with 20 assists in the victory for the Eagles, while eight players tallied a kill in the win. For the host Shorewomen, Brown had a match-best 11 digs, Forget led all players with eight kills and Ward passed out 17 assists. The win for Mary Washington was head coach Dee Conway's 400th career win. Mary Washington downed Albright in three sets in the middle match. Anne Lutkenhaus led all players with 13 kills as the Eagles hit .267 in the win. Kathryn Carter led all players with five service aces, while Shiflett had 28 assists. For the Lions, Nicodemus had 11 digs, tops among all players. The Shorewomen return to action on Wednesday, October 1 at 8:00 p.m. with a Centennial Conference match against visiting Swarthmore.
