6, 2008 GETTYSBURG, PA -- The Washington College volleyball team won its final two matches at the Gettysburg Battlefield Classic at Gettysburg College today. The Shorewomen won their first match of the day, defeating John Jay, 25-13, 25-10, 25-9, and then snapped a 10-match losing streak to Catholic University with a 25-16, 19-25, 25-23, 25-12, victory over the Cardinals. Against John Jay, Washington served 17 aces as a team as senior defensive specialist Kay May (Stafford, VA/Colonial Forge) accounted for nine of them. Senior outside hitter Chelsea Crum (Newark, DE/Charter School of Wilmington) had nine kills in the match, while senior libero Arielle Brown (Merion, PA/Lower Merion) tallied 11 digs. Junior setter Caitlin Ward (Wantagh, NY/Holy Trinity) added 21 assists against the Bloodhounds. The Shorewomen's match against Catholic was tied at one set a piece with the third set deadlocked at 23-23 and Catholic serving the ball before Washington sided out to serve for game point. Crum tallied the decisive kill on the final rally to put the Shorewomen ahead two sets to one. Washington then raced out to a 9-0 lead in the fourth set before Catholic rallied to cut it to 11-8. The Shorewomen answered by scoring the next seven points to take control of the set and go on to win the match. Washington tallied 54 kills against 22 errors in 152 attempts against Catholic for a .211 attack percentage. Freshman outside hitter Alyssa Forget (River Vale, NJ/Pascack Valley) led the way with a career-high 16 kills, while Crum and junior middle hitter Kelli Canada (Midlothian, VA/James River) pounded down 12 kills each. Crum also had 20 digs to turn in a double-double performance, while Brown had 22 digs and May had 14. Ward tallied 43 assists in the victory. The
victory against Catholic was the first for the Shorewomen over the Cardinals since
a 15-13, 13-15, 15-6, 15-7, win on October 31st, 1998. The Shorewomen open Centennial Conference play Wednesday with their home opener - a 7:30 p.m. match against Franklin & Marshall. |
