Shorewomen Spike Cavaliers, 3-0
Feeny With 16 Kills In Debut

CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Freshman outside hitter Lauren Feeny (Upper Darby, PA/Villa Maria Academy) pounded 16 kills in her first collegiate match as Washington College downed visiting Cabrini, 3-0 (30-27, 30-14, 30-27), on Saturday afternoon at the Cain Athletic Center in the season opener for the Shorewomen. The Shorewomen improve to 1-0, while the Cavaliers drop to 0-1.

With the score tied 17-17 in the first game, the Shorewomen scored seven straight points to take control of the set. During the run, senior outside hitter Katherine O'Brien (Severna Park, MD/Severna Park) had two kills and a block to spark the run.

In game two, Washington broke open a 9-9 tie with 12 straight points to take a 21-9 lead. The run was capped by an O'Brien kill. During the run, Feeny finished off three points with kills.

In the third game, the Shorewomen trailed 25-23, before rolling off seven of the last nine points to sweep the match. With the score 28-27, freshman middle hitter Maria Whitman (Galesville, MD/Southern) tallied a kill off of a sophomore setter Caitlin Ward (Wantagh, NY/Holy Trinity) pass to give Washington a 29-27 lead. An attack error by Cabrini ended the match.

Feeny led all players with 16 kills in the match and was one of three Shorewomen to hit over .200 in the contest. O'Brien added 11 kills and led all players with three blocks, while sophomore middle hitter Kelli Canada (Midlothian, VA/James River) delivered eight kills. Ward had a match-best 42 assists, while junior libero Arielle Brown (Merion, PA/Lower Merion) had a match-high 10 digs.

For the Cavaliers, Lindsay Martin had a team-best 11 kills. Lizzie Williams had 17 assists and a match-high three service aces in the tilt. Danielle Finnegan had a team-high seven digs.

The Shorewomen return to action Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. with a non-conference match against visiting Wesley at the Cain Athletic Center.
