2007 CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Senior outside hitter Katherine O'Brien (Severna Park, MD/Severna Park) set the Washington College single-season record in kills and recorded her 1,000th career dig as the Shorewomen swept Bryn Mawr, 3-0 (30-28, 30-28, 30-23) in Centennial Conference volleyball action on Wednesday evening at the Cain Athletic Center. Washington improves to 10-14 overall and 2-7 in the Centennial, while the Owls drop to 8-15 and 0-10 respectively. O'Brien recorded her 1,000th dig on her 10th dig of the match during the 17th point of game two on an attack from Bryn Mawr's Hannah Davis. Her dig helped Washington win the point to take a 12-5 lead. O'Brien had 23 digs on the evening, tying her career-high which she set against St. Mary's (MD) on September 17, 2005. She recorded her record setting 395th kill of the season on her 11th and final kill of the match, on the final point of the match to give the Shorewomen the victory. She breaks the mark of 394 kills which was set by Jennifer Dixon in 1993. She recorded her 17th double-double of the season in the victory. In game one, the Shorewomen won the final two points of the game to win the opener. In the second game, Washington jumped out to a 13-6 lead and held off a furious Owl rally to win 30-28. In the final game, the Shorewomen led 23-19 before winning seven of the final 11 points to complete the sweep. Sophomore middle hitter Kelli Canada (Midlothian, VA/James River) led the Shorewomen with a career-best 12 kills. Freshman Lauren Feeny (Upper Darby, PA/Villa Maria Academy) added 11 kills to join Canada and O'Brien in double-digit kills for Washington. Sophomore setter Caitlin Ward (Wantagh, NY/Holy Trinity) dished out a match-best 40 assists and added 12 digs to record her fourth double-double of the season. Junir libero Arielle Brown (Merion, PA/Lower Merion) chalked up 23 digs to tie O'Brien for the match-high. For Bryn Mawr, Julia Harris led all players with 17 kills and added 11 digs to tally a double-double. Elizabeth Sinclair led the squad with 19 digs, and added 11 kills. Katherine Kronbergs had a double-double with 14 digs and 11 kills. Ashton Shaffer and Katheryn Solook had 16 and 11 digs respectively. Washington concludes its season on Saturday, October 27 with a 1:00 p.m. match at Dickinson in Centennial Conference action. |
