17, 2005 BALTIMORE, MD -- The Washington College volleyball team split four matches to finish fifth overall at the Maryland Division III Tournament, held yesterday and today at Johns Hopkins. The Shorewomen (6-7) lost to Frostburg State in four games, but bounced back for a three-game sweep of Hood on Friday. On Saturday, Washington defeated McDaniel in three games, but then lost to St. Mary's in three games. Match Scores The Shorewomen's first match on Friday saw Frostburg State post a 30-15 win in game one. The Bobcats then scored seven of the final eight points in a 30-24 win in game two. Washington trailed in game three, 21-18, after holding a 12-6 lead, but came back for the 31-29 win. Frostburg won the match by scoring the last five points of a 30-26 victory in game four. Senior outside hitter Abigail Benson (New London, PA/Avon Grove) totaled 11 kills and 13 digs for the Shorewomen in the loss, while senior middle hitter Marcie McConville (Westminster, MD/Westminster) added nine kills, two solo blocks, and two block assists. Junior middle hitter Nanna Kozemchak (Falls Church, VA/St. Stephen's & St. Agnes) finished with nine kills and 13 digs, while freshman setter Arielle Brown (Merion, PA/Lower Merion) contributed 38 assists and 13 digs. Washington's second match Friday was a sweep of Hood College. The Shorewomen cruised to a 30-15 win in game one, but had to rally from a 24-21 deficit to win game two, 30-27. The Shorewomen ended game three on an 8-3 run to post a 30-25 win in the game and claim the match victory. Benson totaled 17 digs and five aces in the win, while senior outside hitter Lauren Ford (Eldersburg, MD/Liberty) pounded down 11 kills and served a pair of aces. McConville also tallied 11 kills, while Brown finished with 30 assists and three aces. The Shorewomen opened Saturday's matches with a 30-24, 30-28, 31-29 win over McDaniel. Washington trailed, 24-19, in the second game, but ended the game on an 11-4 run. In game three, the Shorewomen trailed, 27-24, but ended that game on a 7-2 run. Benson totaled 15 kills and 14 digs in the match, while McConville (11 kills, 10 digs, two solo blocks, one block assist) and Brown (38 assists, 12 digs) also had double-doubles. Kozemchak added 17 digs, while sophomore middle hitter Katherine O'Brien (Severna Park, MD/Severna Park) finished with 15. Ford served five aces in the win, while senior middle hitter Amanda Jones (Chadds Ford, PA/Unionville) recorded four blocks - two solo blocks and two assisted blocks. Washington's final match of the weekend was a 30-24, 30-28, 30-22 loss to St. Mary's Saturday. Benson tallied 12 kills, 15 digs, and four aces in the loss, while O'Brien finished with 23 digs. McConville and Jones each contributed six kills, one block solo, and one block assist. Brown totaled 33 assists. The Shorewomen return to action September 27th with a 7:00 p.m. Centennial Conference home match against McDaniel. |
