September 21, 2004 CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Host Washington College pulled out a 30-22, 19-30, 30-22, 23-30, 15-12 win over visiting Swarthmore to win its Centennial Conference opener in volleyball action this evening at Cain Athletic Center. The Shorewomen (11-4 overall, 1-0 Centennial) got 12 kills in 22 attempts from freshman middle hitter Katherine O'Brien (Severna Park, MD/Severna Park), who played the final three games of the match. Swarthmore slipped to 5-8 overall and 0-2 in conference play. Junior outside hitter Abigail Benson (New London, PA/Avon Grove) led the Shorewomen in both kills and digs, tallying a double-double of 15 and 11, respectively. Junior outside hitter Lauren Ford (Eldersburg, MD/Liberty) and junior middle hitter Marcie McConville (Westminster, MD/Westminster) paced WAC in blocks as they each finished with one solo and four assists. Ford also pounded down nine kills, including the match-winning kill. Sophomore setter Laura Shand (Sykesville, MD/Liberty) contributed 47 assists in the victory. The Shorewomen's win tonight was their fourth in a row of Swarthmore. Washington's 11th win this season equals its win total from the previous four seasons combined. The Shorewomen return to action one week from today with a 7:00 p.m. Centennial Conference match at McDaniel. |
