September 7, 2004 TOWSON, MD -- The Washington College volleyball team remained undefeated with a 30-28, 30-21, 36-34 victory over host Goucher College this evening in Towson, MD. The Shorewomen, now 5-0 on the season, broke a 12-match losing streak to the Gophers that dated back to 1991. Junior outside hitter Abigail Benson (New London, PA/Avon Grove) and sophomore setter Laura Shand (Sykesville, MD/Liberty) each tallied a double-double in the win. Benson pounded down a team-high 12 kills in the match and recorded 16 digs. Shand put up team-highs of 35 assists and 17 digs. Junior middle hitter Marcie McConville (Westminster, MD/Westminster) added 11 kills against only one error and had a team-high seven blocks (four solo, three assisted). Sophomore outside hitter Nanna Kozemchak (Falls Church, VA/St. Stephen's & St. Agnes) and senior outside hitter Laura Greenback (Riva, MD/South River) each drove home nine kills. Greenback also contributed 14 digs. Washington's five wins in five matches this season surpasses its total of four victories from all of 2003 and equals the Shorewomen's most wins in a season in the last seven years. The 2002 squad won five matches; the last Washington volleyball team to top that number was the 1997 team that recorded six victories. The Shorewomen already have three three-game sweeps in the ledger this season, marking the first time the team has accomplished that feat in eight years. The Shorewomen, off to their best start in 26 years, will play at the Gettysburg Battlefield Classic this Friday and Saturday. Their first match at the tournament will be a 5:00 p.m. contest against Randolph-Macon on Friday. |
