13, 2003 BALTIMORE, MD-- The Washington College Shorewomen
went 0-4 this weekend at the Asics Maryland Division III Tournament,
hosted by Johns Hopkins. The Shorewomen (1-12) did win one game in their
match against Villa Julie on Saturday. In Washington's first match Friday, against St. Mary's, sophomore outside hitter Abigail Benson (New London, PA/Avon Grove) tallied a team-high nine kills, while freshman setter Laura Shand (Sykesville, MD/Liberty) contributed 18 assists and two aces. Freshman outside hitter Nanna Kozemchak (Falls Church, VA/St. Stephen's & St. Agnes) tallied eight digs, one solo block and one block assist. The Shorewomen took on Salisbury in their second match. Shand pounded down five kills and had three solo blocks and one block assist in addition to her 18 assists against the Sea Gulls. Benson added seven kills, two aces and six digs, while Kozemchak tallied seven kills. In Saturday's first match against Villa Julie, the Shorewomen pulled out a 34-32 win in game three, but fell in four games. Shand tallied 14 assists, nine digs, two solo blocks, and two block assists against the Mustangs, while Kozemchak finished with 11 kills and four digs. Sophomore middle blocker Marcie McConville (Westminster, MD/Westminster) added nine kills, one solo block, and two block assists. Senior setter Katie Orga (Wilmington, DE/Ursuline Academy) notched 13 assists and six kills, while sophomore setter Kim Dannenfelser (Baltimore, MD/Institute of Notre Dame) had ten digs. The Shorewomen fell to Johns Hopkins in three games in their final match on Saturday, but took the Blue Jays to the limit in each of the final two games before falling 30-28 and 38-36, respectively. Orga had 19 assists and seven kills in the match, while Shand had 10 assists, five kills, nine digs, one solo block, and one block assist. Kozemchak had a team-best 11 kills and also added six digs, while Benson led the team with 12 digs and added nine kills. McConville served a team-high three aces and had team-highs of four solo blocks and two block assists to go along with nine kills. The Shorewomen return to action Wednesday with a 7:00 p.m. match at Goucher. |
