Shorewomen Open Season at Moravian

BETHLEHEM, PA -- The Washington College Shorewomen opened their 2003 season this weekend at the Moravian College Greyhound Premiere. The Shorewomen went 0-4 at the tournament and are back in action next Friday and Saturday at the Gettysburg Battlefield Classic.

The Shorewomen fell to the tournament hosts in their first match Friday evening. Freshman setter Laura Shand (Sykesville, MD/Liberty) put up team-highs of seven assists and eight digs and notched a pair of kills. Sophomore outside hitter Abigail Benson (New London, PA/Avon Grove) tallied six digs and two kills.

Benson recorded team-highs of six kills and five digs in Friday night's match against York (PA). Kozemchak matched Benson's team-high of five digs and added three kills, while sophomore middle blocker Marcie McConville (Westminster, MD/Westminster) pounded down five kills and tallied one solo block and one block assist. Sophomore outside hitter Lauren Ford (Eldersburg, MD/Liberty) served four aces and had one block assist, while Shand finished with five assists, four digs, and one solo block.

In Saturday's matches against Alvernia and Gallaudet, Shand combined for 13 assists, 11 digs, three aces, and two solo blocks. Benson scooped out 15 digs, and recorded four kills and two assists in the two matches, while McConville had four kills, four aces, two solo blocks and one block assist.
