WC Extends Two Opponents to Four Games
at Gettysburg Battlefield Classic

GETTYSBURG, PA -- The Washington College Shorewomen went 0-4 this weekend at the Gettysburg Battlefield Classic. The Shorewomen (0-8) did win the first game in both their first and last match of the tournament.

The Shorewomen took game one against Gallaudet Friday night, but then dropped the next three. Freshman setter Laura Shand (Sykesville, MD/Liberty) had 19 assists and nine digs in the match, while sophomore outside hitter Abigail Benson (New London, PA/Avon Grove) led the Shorewomen in kills (10), digs (11), and aces (six). Sophomore middle blocker Marcie McConville (Westminster, MD/Westminster) added four aces, six digs, one solo block, three block assists, and five kills.

In WC's second match on Friday, against Moravian, Benson again led the team in digs (nine) and in kills (five). She also served one ace. Shand finished with six assists, six digs, and two kills, while sophomore outside hitter Lauren Ford (Eldersburg, MD/Liberty) tallied two solo blocks, two assisted blocks, and three kills.

In Saturday's first match against Johns Hopkins, Benson pounded down 10 kills and served three aces. Senior setter Katie Orga (Wilmington, DE/Ursuline Academy) notched 11 assists and added three kills. Shand tallied 11 assists and three kills, while Ford contributed six kills, one solo block, one assisted block, and two digs. Freshman outside hitter Nanna Kozemchak (Falls Church, VA/St. Stephen's & St. Agnes) scooped out five digs.

The Shorewomen won the first game of their final match Saturday, but saw Eastern Mennonite win the next three. Shand tallied 15 assists and three aces, while Orga finished with eight assists and four aces. Ford contributed six kills and four solo blocks against the Royals, while McConville pounded down nine kills and had two solo blocks. Benson scooped out eight digs and recorded six kills.

The Shorewomen return to action Wednesday with a 7:00 p.m. match at Hood.
