25, 2001 CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Despite a strong showing in the third game, the Washington College volleyball team was swept by visiting St. Mary's (MD) tonight in the Shorewomen's home finale. The Seahawks (12-17) cruised to 30-14 and 30-16 wins in the first two games, but Washington (1-27) took them to the limit in the third game before falling, 32-30. The Seahawks jumped out to a 15-1 lead in the first game as freshman outside hitter Lindsay Becker (Trappe, MD/Easton) served 11 straight points. St. Mary's used another big run in game two to extend a 6-5 lead into a 15-6 advantage to take control of the game. The biggest lead for either team in the third game was four, 7-3 St. Mary's. The game featured 11 ties. The Shorewomen twice built three-point leads, the second coming after a dig by freshman outside hitter Laura Greenback (Riva, MD/South River) led to a St. Mary's hitting error and gave WC a 26-23 lead. Greenback also gave the Shorewomen their last two-point lead, 28-26, with a kill. After St. Mary's tied the score a kill by senior middle block Jody Costa (Baldwin, MD/Dulaney) put the Seahawks ahead, 29-28, but Greenback notched another kill to tie the score. Costa came right back with a kill to put SMC ahead, 30-29. The Shorewomen tied the score one last time, but St. Mary's came away with the win off a kill by freshman middle block Nicole Tuttle (Timonium, MD/Dulaney). Greenback finished with team highs of 13 kills and 11 digs. Junior middle hitter Beka Beckett (Cordova, AK/Cordova) notched two solo blocks, while junior setter Amy Milauskas (Ellicott City, MD/Seton Keough) finished with 27 assists. The Shorewomen close out their season Saturday at the Messiah Invitational. |
