2008 FREDERICKSBURG, VA -- Host Mary Washington, the third-ranked team in the Atlantic South region and seventh-ranked team in Division III, defeated visiting Washington College, 9-0, in a non-conference women's tennis match this afternoon in Fredericksburg, VA. The Eagles improved to 18-3 with the win, while the Shorewomen fell to 11-4 with the loss. In doubles, Becky Morse-Karzen and Natalia Fugate, the third-ranked doubles team in the region, beat junior Kate Barston (Darien, CT/Darien) and freshman Mary Kelley (Frederick, MD/Glenelg Country School), 8-0, at No. 1. Kate Malpeli and Megan Lawlor were 8-1 winners against sophomore Carrie Palmer (Dallas, TX/Greenhill School) and junior Kristen Hossick (Ashton, MD/Mount de Sales Academy) at No. 2, while Courtney Goimarac and Stacey Rickard downed senior Allison Daciek (Severna Park, MD/Severna Park) and freshman Kristine Depew (Downingtown, PA/Westtown School), 8-0, at No. 3. Morse-Karzen beat Daciek, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 1 singles, while Goimarac blanked junior Rebecca Davis (Maplewood, NJ/Columbia), 6-0, 6-0, at No. 2. Fugate added a 6-0, 6-2, win against Hossick at No. 3, Malpeli was a 6-0, 6-0, winner over Barston at No. 4, and Amy Sheetz downed Palmer, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 5. Jessica Armes posted a 6-1, 6-3, victory against Kelley at No. 6. The Shorewomen return to action Friday with a 4:00 p.m. Centennial Conference match at Muhlenberg. |
