2008 SWARTHMORE, PA -- Host Swarthmore College, the eighth-ranked team in the Atlantic South region, got past visiting Washington College, 5-4, a Centennial Conference women's tennis match today. The Garnet improved to 5-2 overall and 4-1 in conference play with the win, while the Shorewomen fell to 7-2 and 2- with the loss. Washington took two of the three doubles matches to take a 2-1 lead against the Garnet. Junior Lydia Bull (Berkeley Heights, NJ/Kent Place School) and junior Kristen Hossick (Ashton, MD/Mount de Sales Academy) ran their 2008 record to 9-0 with an 8-6 win over Erica Lukoski and Luann Cignavitch at No. 2, while senior Allison Daciek (Severna Park, MD/Severna Park) and sophomore Carrie Palmer (Dallas, TX/Greenhill School) improved to 5-0 with an an 8-5 victory against Alexis Hickman and Jamie Midyette at No. 3. Swarthmore's Jennie Park and Rachel Wallwork defeated junior Kate Barston (Darien, CT/Darien) and freshman Mary Kelley (Frederick, MD/Glenelg Country School), 8-4, at No. 1. Swarthmore bounced back to win the match by capturing four of the six singles spots, including all of the top three. Wallwork beat Daciek, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 1, Park beat junior Rebecca Davis (Maplewood, NJ/Columbia), 6-2, 6-2, at No. 2, and Midyette beat Bull, 7-6, 6-4, at No. 3. Swarthmore also won at No. 5 as Cignavitch beat Palmer, 6-3, 6-1. Hossick improved to 8-0 in singles this spring with a 6-2, 6-0, win over Lukoski at No. 4 and Kelley defeated Sofia Gall, 6-2, 7-5, at No. 6 to account for the Shorewomen's two singles wins. The Shorewomen return to action Tuesday with a 3:30 p.m. Centennial Conference match at Franklin & Marshall. |
