2008 CHESTERTOWN, MD -- The Washington College women's tennis team recorded its seventh straight victory this afternoon, defeating visiting Haverford College, 8-1, in a Centennial Conference match played inside the Lifetime Fitness Center this afternoon. Washington, now 7-1 overall and 2-0 in conference play, is off to the second-best start in program history. Washington juniors Lydia Bull (Berkeley Heights, NJ/Kent Place School) and Kristen Hossick (Ashton, MD/Mount de Sales Academy) won the first seven games of No. 2 doubles en route to an 8-2 victory over Meaghan Ryan and Jaclyn Porter. Senior Allison Daciek (Severna Park, MD/Severna Park) and sophomore Carrie Palmer (Dallas, TX/Greenhill School) gave the Shorewomen a 2-0 lead with an 8-3 win over Fumiko Shogase and Katherine Drooyan at No. 3 doubles. Junior Kate Barston (Darien, CT/Darien) and freshman Mary Kelley (Frederick, MD/Glenelg Country School) made it 3-0 in favor of the Shorewomen by pulling out a 9-7 win over Katharine Wettick and Helen Fisun at No. 1. Barston and Kelley held a 6-3 lead before Wettick and Fisun won four straight games to take a 7-6 lead. Barston and Kelley responded by winning the final three games to earn the victory. Hossick led off singles with a 6-1, 6-0, win over Shogase at No. 4 to give the Shorewomen a 4-0 lead. Daciek clinched the win for the Shorewomen by completing a 6-4, 1-6, 1-0 (10-8), win over Wettick at No. 1. Haverford got on the board with a win at No. 2 singles as Fisun downed junior Rebecca Davis (Maplewood, NJ/Columbia), 6-3, 7-5. Bull bested Karen Lavi, 6-0, 4-6, 1-0 (10-8), at No. 4 and Palmer downed Porter, 8-2, at No. 5, to give Washington a 7-1 advantage. Kelley finished off the match with an 8-2 win over Drooyan at No. 6. The 1991 Shorewomen got off to a program-record 12-1 start on the way to a 16-2 record and the Middle Atlantic Conference Championship, the first conference championship ever won by a WC women's varsity sport. The Shorewomen return to action Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. Centennial Conference match at Swarthmore. |
