22, 2008 LEWES, DE -- Division I Delaware State edged Washington College, 5-4, in a women's tennis match today in Lewes, DE. The Hornets evened their record at 1-1 with the win, while the Shorewomen were playing their dual-match season opener and first dual match under head coach Dr. Dave Marshall ('88). The Shorewomen took two of the three doubles matches against their scholarship opponents. Juniors Lydia Bull (Berkeley Heights, NJ/Kent Place School) and Kristen Hossick (Ashton, MD/Mount de Sales Academy) were 8-2 winners against Anna Kovtun and Polina Razborova at No. 2, while senior Allison Daciek (Severna Park, MD/Severna Park) and sophomore Kellie Foster (Lothian, MD/St. Mary's) defeated Kelly Carrigan and Cassandra Newton, 8-4, at No. 3. Hossick added a 4-6, 7-5, 10-8, win in singles at No. 4 over Newton, while Foster cruised to a 6-1, 6-1, win over Hannah Adewumi at No. 5. Two other Shorewomen took their Division I opponent to a decisive super-tiebreaker in singles as Bull lost to Yaroslava Balakhonova, 7-6, 2-6, 10-8, at No. 3 and freshman Mary Kelley (Frederick, MD/Glenelg Country School) fell to Julieta Young, 6-1, 6-7, 10-7, at No. 6. The Shorewomen return to action March 1st with a 1:00 p.m. home match against Salisbury. |
