2008 BALTIMORE, MD -- Host and top-seeded Johns Hopkins defeated visiting four-seed Washington College, 5-1, in a Centennial Conference women's tennis semifinal match today in Baltimore, MD. The Blue Jays, ranked 21st in Division III and sixth in the Atlantic South region, improved to 14-3 and advanced to Sunday's championship match with the win, while the Shorewomen, ranked 12th in the region, fall to 12-6 following the loss. The Blue Jays captured two of the three doubles to take a 2-1 lead going into singles. Anita Bhamidipati and Brittany Matava, ranked eighth in the region, won by an 8-6 score at No. 1 doubles and the duo of Ellen Berlinghof and Yasmine Elamir prevailed, 8-2, at No. 3 doubles. Washington captured the first point of the match with the team of senior Allison Daciek (Severna Park, MD/Severna Park) and junior Lydia Bull (Berkeley Heights, NJ/Kent Place School) captured No. 2 doubles, 8-0. Hopkins won the first three singles matches to seal the victory. Matava, ranked 15th in the region, won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2 singles, Amanda Schubert gained victory at No. 5 by scores of 6-4, 6-0 and Berlinghof tallied a 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 6. |
