Shorewomen Sink Salisbury, 6-3
First Win Over Sea Gulls in 11 Years

SALISBURY, MD -- The Washington College women's tennis team, ranked 15th in the Atlantic South region, defeated host Salisbury University, 6-3, in a non-conference match this afternoon. The Shorewomen, who improved to 9-7 overall this season, recorded their first win over their Eastern Shore rivals since 1994.

The Shorewomen won at the top two spots in doubles play as the tandems of freshman Allison Daciek (Severna Park, MD/Severna Park) and junior Beth Foster (Lothian, MD/St. Mary's) and freshman Blake Leeser (Irvington, NY/Irvington) and senior Samantha Halpin (Red Lion, PA/Red Lion) won by identical 8-5 scores at No. 1 and No. 2 respectively.

Daciek and sophomore Erika Kayukawa (Gifu, Japan, St. Mary's Girls) cruised to wins in singles play. Daciek was a 6-2, 6-0 winner at No. 1, while Kayukawa was a 6-1, 6-1 winner at No. 6. Halpin clinched the match for Washington with a 7-5, 6-0 win at No. 4. Freshman Ryoko Sawada (Kushiro, Japan/Kushiro Koryo) provided the Shorewomen with their sixth point of the match with a 6-3, 1-6, 10-3 win at No. 5.

Washington had lost 10 straight matches to Salisbury since posting a 5-2 win during the 1994 season.

The Shorewomen are back in action Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. Centennial Conference home match against Muhlenberg.
