March 16, 2005 CHESTERTOWN, MD -- The Washington College women's tennis team defeated visiting Haverford College, 6-3, this afternoon and evening at the Lifetime Fitness Center in the Centennial Conference opener for both teams. The Shorewomen, now 4-3 overall this season, are ranked 14th in the Atlantic South region, one spot behind the Fords. The Shorewomen took a 2-1 lead after doubles play. Freshman Allison Daciek (Severna Park, MD/Severna Park) and senior Samantha Halpin (Red Lion, PA/Red Lion), tied for 25th in the Atlantic South in doubles, defeated Allyson Scherb and Sarah Loeffler, the region's 20th ranked duo, 8-4, at No. 1. Junior Lyndsey Beidle (Linthicum, MD/North County) and sophomore Erika Kayukawa (Gifu, Japan/St. Mary's Girls) posted an 8-2 win at No. 3. Daciek, ranked 36th in singles in the region, gave the Shorewomen a 3-1 lead in the match with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Laura Chaddock, the region's 32nd-ranked singles player, at No. 1 singles. Priya Amar was a 6-4, 6-4 winner at No. 4 to trim the lead to 3-2. Washington junior Beth Foster (Lothian, MD/St. Mary's) posted a 6-4, 7-5 win at No. 3 to make it 4-2. Seconds after Foster's win, freshman Blake Leeser (Irvington, NY/Irvington), tied for 45th in the region in singles, completed a 1-6, 6-4, 6-0 comeback victory at No. 2 to give the Shorewomen their fifth point and clinch the match. Kayukawa added Washington's other singles win with an 8-4 victory at No. 6. The win was Washington's fifth in a row over Haverford, all by final scores of either 5-4 or 6-3. The Shorewomen return to action one week from today with a 3:00 p.m. Centennial Conference match at Ursinus. Match Results |
