17, 2004 CHESTERTOWN, MD -- The Washington College women's tennis team won its Centennial Conference opener this afternoon, defeating visiting Ursinus College, 8-1, at the Lifetime Fitness Center. The Shorewomen improved to 4-2 overall with the win. Washington won all three doubles matches in the victory. Seniors Ne'ko Browder (Bronx, NY/Herbert H. Lehman) and Shoko Nakamura (Osaka, Japan/Osaka Jogakuin) were 8-2 winners at No. 1, while freshman Erika Kayukawa (Gifu, Japan/St. Mary's Girls) and sophomore Jaclyn Moore (Wenonah, NJ/Gateway Regional) posted an 8-4 win at No. 3. At No. 2, junior Samantha Halpin (Red Lion, PA/Red Lion) and sophomore Lyndsey Beidle (Linthicum, MD/North County) pulled out a 9-8(1) victory. The Shorewomen also won five of the six singles matches. Browder cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 1, while Nakamura scored a 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 2. Senior Linda Hooks (Woodstown, NJ/Woodstown) won her match at No. 3 singles, 6-4, 2-0 ret. Halpin put up a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 4, while Moore scored a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 5. The Shorewomen are back in action Tuesday with a 3:00 p.m. home Centennial Conference match at Johns Hopkins.
