3, 2004 ST. MARY'S CITY, MD -- The Washington College women's tennis team improved to 2-0 this season with a 6-3 win at St. Mary's (MD) College this afternoon. The Shorewomen captured the top four spots in singles and two out of three doubles matches in the victory. Washington took the first three flights in singles in straight sets. Senior Shoko Nakamura (Osaka, Japan/Osaka Jogakuin) was a 6-2, 6-3 winner at No. 1, while senior Linda Hooks (Woodstown, NJ/Woodstown) won by the same score at No. 2. Junior Samantha Halpin (Red Lion, PA/Red Lion) scored a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 3. At No. 4, freshman Erika Kayukawa (Gifu, Japan/St. Mary's Girls) rallied for a 0-6, 7-5, (10-7) victory. Nakamura and Kayukawa teamed for a 9-8 (3) win at No. 1 doubles. Washington's other win in doubles came at No. 3, where Halpin and junior Marisa Lombardo (New York City, NY/Marymount School) scored an 8-6 conquest. The Shorewomen were without the services of senior Ne'ko Browder (Bronx, NY/Herbert H. Lehman), their usual No. 1 singles player, and sophomore Jaclyn Moore (Wenonah, NJ/Gateway Regional). Head coach Constantine Ananiadis was pleased with the effort put forth by his players, stating, "I'm happy with how we responded to competing without two of our top players. Everyone in the lineup stepped up today." The Shorewomen return to action Tuesday with a 3:00 p.m. match at Hollins.
