10, 2002 HILTON HEAD, SC -- The Washington College Shorewomen closed out their trip to Hilton Head, SC, today with a hard-fought 6-3 win over Mississippi College. Three of the six singles matches went three sets and the Shorewomen (5-1) winning two of those long matches. The match opened with singles play and the Shorewomen posted two-set wins at No. 2, No. 5, and No. 6. Sophomore Shoko Nakamura (Osaka, Japan/Osaka Jogakuin) won at No. 2, 6-4, 6-2; sophomore Christina Vouros (Salisbury, MD/Worcester Prep) won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 5, and freshman Samantha Halpin (Red Lion, PA/Red Lion) won 6-4, 6-2, at No. 6. The other three singles matches were hotly contested. Washington sophomore Ne'ko Browder (Bronx, NY/Herbert H. Lehman) won the first set, 6-1, against Laura Baker at No. 1, but then dropped the second set 1-6, before coming back to win the third set, 6-1. At No. 3, WC junior Devon Hufnal (Dover, DE/Dover) dropped the first set 3-6, but rallied to win the final two sets 6-2 and 6-1 in her win over Diane Swaln. At No. 4, the Choctaws' Amanda Turner posted a 1-6, 7-5, 6-3 win over Shorewoman sophomore Linda Hooks (Woodstown, NJ/Woodstown). The Choctaws went on to win two of the three doubles contests, but the result of the match had already been decided with the Shorewomen racking up five points in singles. Browder and Nakamura earned WC's lone doubles point with an 8-2 win at No. 1 that ran their record this season to 7-1, including a perfect 6-0 in dual match play. The Shorewomen are off until March 20 when they open Centennial Conference play with a home match against Ursinus that will begin at 3:30 p.m.
