3, 2002 HAVERFORD, PA -- For the second straight season, the Washington College Shorewomen have pulled out a 5-4 victory over Centennial Conference foe Haverford College. This year's win came this afternoon and evening indoors at Haverford. The Shorewomen, ranked 15th in the Atlantic South region, improved to 9-2 overall and 4-1 in conference play, while the Fords, tied for 10th in the region, fell to 3-9 overall and 1-2 in conference play. The Shorewomen took a 2-1 lead in the match by winning two of the three doubles matches. Sophomores Ne'ko Browder (Bronx, NY/Herbert H. Lehman) and Shoko Nakamura (Osaka, Japan/Osaka Jogakuin), the defending conference champions and 15th-ranked pair in the region, downed Alyssa Kennedy and Anya Moyston, the region's 13th-ranked pair, 7-4 at No. 1. Junior Devon Hufnal (Dover, DE/Dover) and senior Erin Spatafore (Reisterstown, MD/Franklin) won by an identical score at No. 2. Huma Safdar and Astra Wallace picked up a point for the Fords with an 8-6 win at No. 3. In singles, the second through fifth spots were decided in two sets. Moyston, the 30th-ranked singles player in the region, defeated Nakamura, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 2 and Kendra Metzger defeated WC sophomoe Linda Hooks (Woodstown, NJ/Woodstown), 6-1, 7-5 at No. 4 for Haverford. Washington's two-set wins came at No. 3, where Hufnal defeated Taleen Vartan, 6-3, 6-1, and at No. 5, where Spatafore was a 6-1, 6-1 winner. The other two singles matches were decided in three sets. In a battle of the two players tied for 22nd in the regional rankings, Kennedy defeated Browder, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3. The Shorewomen pulled out the match win, however,when sophomore Christina Vouros (Salisbury, MD/Worcester Prep) won 6-1, 4-6, 7-5. The Shorewomen return to action Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. conference match at Gettysburg.
