13, 2002 CHESTERTOWN, MD -- The Washington College Shorewomen remained one-half game ahead of Muhlenberg for first place in the Centennial Conference with a 5-4 win over visiting Franklin & Marshall this afternoon at Schottland Tennis Pavilion. The Shorewomen, ranked 15th in the Atlantic South region, improved to 12-2 overall and 7-1 in conference play with the win over the Diplomats, who are tied for tenth in the region. In doubles, the Shorewomen claimed the top two spots to take a 2-1 lead. Sophomores Ne'ko Browder (Bronx, NY/Herbert H. Lehman) and Shoko Nakamura (Osaka, Japan/Osaka Jogakuin) won at No. 1 by an 8-5 count, while junior Devon Hufnal (Dover, DE/Dover) and senior Erin Spatafore (Reisterstown, MD/Franklin) won at No. 2 by an 8-2 final. The two teams split the singles matches, with WC winning at the top three spots. Browder was a 6-0, 6-2 winner at No. 1, Nakamura was a 7-5, 6-2 winner at No. 2, and Hufnal was a 6-2, 6-1 winner at No. 3. The Shorewomen avenged an 8-1 loss to the Diplomats last season with the win. Looking for its first Centennial title, Washington has two conference matches remaining on its schedule. Before returning to conference play, however, the Shorewomen will host Salisbury at 3:00 p.m. Tuesday.
