24, 2001 FREDERICKSBURG, VA -- The Washington College women's tennis team competed at the ITA Southeast Regionals this weekend at Mary Washington College. Sophomore Linda Hooks (Woodstown, NJ/Woodstown) and junior Devon Hufnal (Dover, DE/Dover) advanced to the quarterfinals in the blue draw of doubles competition. Sophomore Ne'ko Browder (Bronx, NY/Herbert H. Lehman) was the Shorewoman to advance furthest in singles play, reaching the third round in the main draw. Browder won her opening match, 6-2, 6-2 and was victorious in the second round by a 7-5, 6-1 count. Her 6-1, 6-0 third-round loss came at the hands of Elizabeth Law of Washington & Lee. Hufnal also won her opening-round match in the main draw of singles, 6-1, 6-4, before falling in the second round. Sophomore Shoko Nakamura (Osaka, Japan/Osaka Jogakuin) lost in the first round of the main draw, but bounced back to win on of her two consolation matches. Two Washington players reached the second round in the blue draw of singles play - Hooks and freshman Samantha Halpin (Red Lion, PA/Red Lion). Browder and Nakamura were the only doubles team to enter the main draw for the Shorewomen. They posted a 8-2 win in the first round before falling in the second. Hooks and Hufnal's run in the blue draw of doubles began with an 8-2 win in the first round and continued with a 9-7 victory in the second. In the quarterfinals, they lost to Elizabeth Lowry and Taleen Vartan of Haverford. The Shorewomen open their 2002 season February 22 with a home match against Carnegie Mellon.
