30, 2009 LANCASTER, PA -- Three Washington College softball players have been named to the All-Centennial Conference team in a vote conducted by the conference's coaches. Freshman outfielder Leigh Carbutt (Collegeville, PA/Perkiomen Valley) garnered a spot on the first team, freshman outfielder Gabby Devaud (Baltimore, MD/Institute of Notre Dame) was named to the second team, while freshman infielder Tori Ripple (Baltimore, MD/John Carroll) earned honorable mention recognition. Carbutt is the first-ever Washington softball player and the 28th player in the history of the conference to make first team All-CC as a freshman. Carbutt, who had 53 hits to lead all conference players in the regular season while setting the Washington College record for hits in a season, led the team with a .424 batting averaged and started in all 37 games for the Shorewomen in 2009. She also led the team in doubles (10), total bases (69), on-base percentage (.467) and stolen bases (13). Carbutt was second on the squad in slugging percentage at .552. The outfielder had a 10-game hitting streak from March 8-18 and an eight-game hitting streak from April 18-23. Carbutt had 17 multi-hit games and had a career-high four hits at Immaculata in game two on March 18. She was second in the Centennial in batting average, third in total bases, tied for third in stolen bases and fifth in doubles during the regular season. Devaud, who played in all 37 games, led the team in runs scored (25), triples (3), home runs (7), RBI (25), slugging percentage (.606), hit by pitch (4) and sacrifice flies (2). Devaud, who was second on the squad in total bases with 60, went on a home run tear in April when she set the WC record with four home runs in a three-game span and hit a longball in all three contests, also a Washington record. She hit one home run in both games of the April 8 doubleheader versus Ursinus and launched two homers in game one against Gettysburg on April 10. In the conference during regular season play, she was second in triples, tied for second in home runs, fourth in runs scored and fifth in total bases. Ripple led the team with 12 walks and 296 putouts this season. She was second on the team in home runs (5) and RBI (23), while tying for second on the Shorewomen in stolen bases (6) and hit by pitch (3). Ripple, who started all 36 games she played in for Washington in 2009, had eight multi-hit games and her first career hit and home run was a grand slam versus Penn State-Harrisburg on March 11. She was tops for all players in the conference in the regular season with 319 fielding chances and 296 putouts and was tied for fourth in the Centennial regular season in hit by pitch and fifth in home runs. From April 10-23, she had a streak where she had at least one hit in 10 of the 11 games, including five games where she pounded out two hits. The Shorewomen had three of the five freshmen all-conference selections this season. |
