2008 KISSIMMEE, FL -- The Washington College softball team split a pair of games at the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, FL, today. The Shorewomen dropped their first game of the day to Marian (IN), 10-1, but bounced back to defeat Emmanuel in their second game, 7-3. The Shorewomen are now 2-6 on the season. In the Shorewomen's first game of the day, Marian took a 1-0 lead on an RBI ground out by Mallory Ortwein in the first inning. The Knights added a pair of runs in the sixth on RBI doubles by Sandy Corum and Angie Such. Marian blew the game open in the top of the seventh by scoring seven runs. That inning included two-run doubles by Ortwein and Sarah Thompson and an RBI double by Jessica Slayton. Washington got on the board in the bottom of the seventh senior third baseman Amanda Campbell (Boothwyn, PA/Garnet Valley) doubled and scored on a double by senior catcher Kim Proctor (Ferndale, MD/Institue of Notre Dame). Slayton, Corum, Chelsea Young, and Samantha Hypes each had two hits in the game for the Knights. Kristi Roth got the win in the circle, allowing no runs on three hits and a walk while striking out three batters in six innings. Proctor went 2-for-3 in the loss for the Shorewomen. Against Emmanuel, the Shorewomen scored six runs in the top of the third inning to take a commanding lead. Senior outfielder Tricia Carroll (Owings Mills, MD/Owings Mills) scored on an error, Junior first baseman Meghan Luterzo (Hasbrouck Heights, NJ/St. Mary's) hit a two-run double, senior second baseman Megan Russell (Federalsburg, MD/Seaford Christian, DE) had an RBI single, and Carroll came up again and hit a two-run single to provide the Shorewomen's final two runs of the frame. Washington added another run in the fourth as Luterzo drove in a run on a fielder's choice. Emmanuel scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning as Stephanie Rege hit an RBI double that wound up scoring a second run on an error and Jennifer Walsh hit an RBI double. Luterzo went 2-for-4 with three RBI and a double against Emmanuel, while Proctor was 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored, Carroll was 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored, and Russell was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Senior outfielder Irene Pastorino (Swarthmore, PA/Cardinal O'Hara) was 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored in the win. Senior pitcher Michelle Laque (Ocean Pines, MD/Stephen Decatur) was credited with the victory, allowing three runs on 10 hits while striking out seven in seven innings of work. Danielle Andruskiwec and Erin McSheffrey each had two hits for Emmanuel. The Shorewomen will play wrap up play at the Rebel Spring Games tomorrow with a 1:00 p.m. game against Anderson and a 5:00 p.m. game against Lake Forest. |
