2008 KISSIMMEE, FL -- The Washington College softball team fell to 1-5 on the season with a pair of losses at the Rebel Spring Games today in Kissimmee, FL. In their first game, the Shorewomen fell to Cortland State, 4-3. In their second game, Transylvania posted a 14-5 win over the Shorewomen in six innings. In the Shorewomen's first game of the day, Cortland took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second when Bethany Williamson on a single by Sammi Dieffenbach. The Red Dragons added to their lead in the third inning when Shara Evanter hit a two-run double to make it 3-0. Washington evened the score in the top of the fourth inning as senior third baseman Amanda Campbell (Boothwyn, PA/Garnet Valley) singled in senior outfielder Meg Travers (Huntingtown, MD/Calvert), who had doubled to lead off the inning, and senior second baseman Megan Russell (Federalsburg, MD/Seaford Christian, DE) doubled in Campbell and junior pitcher Emily Adams (Bethesda, MD/Bethesda-Chevy Chase) to knot the score at 3-3. Cortland regained the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning when Brooke Weidman scored on an error. Washington got a runner on in the sixth, but could not tie the score as the Red Dragons came away with the 4-3 win. Evanter went 3-for-3 in the game for the Red Dragons, while Rose Morrison was 2-for-3. Danielle Singer got the win for Cortland, pitching the final three and one-third innings in relief, allowing no runs on two hits and no walks. Junior first baseman Meghan Luterzo (Hasbrouck Heights, NJ/St. Mary's) went 2-for-3 for the Shorewomen, while Travers, Russell, and sophomore designated hitter Jasmine Queen (Churchton, MD/Southern) each had a double. In Washington's second game of the day, Transylvania took a 3-0 lead in the top of the second inning. The Shorewomen answered in the bottom of the inning by scoring five runs. Senior catcher Kim Proctor (Ferndale, MD/Institue of Notre Dame), senior outfielder Irene Pastorino (Swarthmore, PA/Cardinal O'Hara), Luterzo, and Travers each had an RBI single in the inning and Pastorino scored on an error. The Pioneers regained the lead in the top of the third inning as Kendra DeArk drove in a run on a fielder's choice and later scored on a double by Olivia Wall and Alex Spainhour had an RBI single to make it 6-5. An RBI single by Brittany Leach and an RBI triple by DeArk in the top of the fourth inning stretched the Pioneers' lead to 8-5. Jessica Broadhead hit an RBI single in the fifth to make it 9-5. In the sixth inning, DeArk hit her second RBI triple and and then scored on a single by Wall to give the Pioneers an 11-5 advantage. A two-run double by Meredith Skeeters and an RBI double by Broadhead later in the sixth pushed the difference to nine runs at 14-5. Spainhour finished the game 4-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored for the Pioneers, while Broadhead was 3-for-5 with a double and three RBI. DeArk drove in three runs and scored two others. DeArk also got the win in the circle, allowing no runs on two hits and a walk in four and two-thirds innings in relief. Freshman shortstop Jes Van Gosen (Virginia Beach, VA/Tallwood) was 2-for-3 with a walk in the loss for Washington, while Adams doubled for the Shorewomen's only extra-base hit. The Shorewomen will play Marian (IN) at 9:00 a.m. and Emmanuel at 11:00 a.m. Thursday at the Rebel Spring Games. |
