Shorewomen Sweep Green Terror
Adams Tosses Three-Hit Shutout in Opener

CHESTERTOWN, MD -- The Washington College softball team opened Centennial Conference play by sweeping visiting McDaniel College, 3-0, and 8-2, in a double-header this afternoon in Chestertown. Junior pitcher Emily Adams (Bethesda, MD/Bethesda-Chevy Chase) tossed a three-hit shutout in game one for the Shorewomen, who are now 7-7 overall.

The Shorewomen scored all three runs of the first game in the first inning. Junior first baseman Meghan Luterzo (Hasbrouck Heights, NJ/St. Mary's) doubled in freshman shortstop Jes Van Gosen (Virginia Beach, VA/Tallwood) to put the Shorewomen on the board. Senior third baseman Amanda Campbell (Boothwyn, PA/Garnet Valley) singled in Luterzo and Adams drove in senior second baseman Megan Russell (Federalsburg, MD/Seaford Christian, DE) to complete the three-run first inning for Washington.

Russell and Campbell each went 2-for-3 for the Shorewomen in the first game. Karyn Curley went 2-for-3 with two doubles for McDaniel (5-9, 0-2 Centennial). Adams walked none in her three-hit shutout and recorded 16 ground-ball outs.

McDaniel took a 2-1 lead in the top of third inning of the second game when Kristina Skinner scored on an error, but the Shorewomen plated three runs in the bottom of the frame to regain the lead, 4-2. Senior outfielder Meg Travers (Huntingtown, MD/Calvert) hit a two-run double in the inning and scored on a single by senior catcher Kim Proctor (Ferndale, MD/Institue of Notre Dame). Washington scored four more runs in the bottom of the fourth, all of them coming with two outs and the bases loaded. Luterzo brought in a run with a walk, Russell hit an RBI single, Proctor hit an RBI single, and senior third baseman Amanda Campbell (Boothwyn, PA/Garnet Valley) drove in a run with a walk.

Luterzo finished the second game 2-for-3 with a walk, two doubles, an RBI, and a run scored. Senior outfielder Irene Pastorino (Swarthmore, PA/Cardinal O'Hara) was 3-for-3 with two runs scored, while Russell and Proctor each went 2-for-4. Russell had one RBI, while Proctor had two. Senior pitcher Michelle Laque (Ocean Pines, MD/Stephen Decatur) went the distance in the win, allowing two runs, one of them earned, on six hits and no walks while striking out six batters.

Skinner, who doubled twice, and Kate Phelan, each went 2-for-3 for the Green Terror in the second game.

The Shorewomen return to action Tuesday with a 3:00 p.m. Centennial Conference home double-header against Haverford.
