Washington Sacks Mighty Macs In DH
Shorewomen Win Both Games By A Single Run

CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Host Washington College posted a pair of one-run victories over visiting Immaculata University on Wednesday afternoon in a softball doubleheader on the campus of Washington College. The Shorewomen (5-7) downed the Might Macs (0-6), 2-1, in the opener and, 6-5, in the nightcap.

In the opener, Washington loaded the bases in the bottom of the first and freshman Jes Van Gosen (Virginia Beach, VA/Tallwood) scored on a fielder's choice to make it 1-0. The lead would hold up until the top of the fifth when the Mighty Macs evened the score on a fielder's choice that plated Val Rutl-Guerriere. In the bottom of the sixth inning, senior Meg Travers (Huntingtown, MD/Calvert) led off the frame with a single to left-center. She advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt off the bat of junior Meghan Luterzo (Hasbrouck Heights, NJ/St. Mary's) and advanced to third on a Mighty Mac throwing error. Travers scored on a sacrifice fly by senior Megan Russell (Federalsburg, MD/Seaford Christian (DE)). Immaculata got one runner on in the top of the seventh, but could not push the tying run across.

Washington got a two-hit complete game performance from junior pitcher Emily Adams (Bethesda, MD/Bethesda-Chevy Chase) in the win. Adams retired the first 12 Immaculata batters of the game and improves to 3-2 on the season, allowing zero earned runs. Rutl-Guerriere took the loss and falls to 0-3. She allowed just five hits and one earned run in the defeat.

Travers went 2-for-3 and scored a run in the victory for the hosts, the lone player to get multiple hits during the contest.

In game two, the Shorewomen jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first, sending 10 players to the plate. Van Gosen, Travers, Luterzo and Russell all scored for the hosts in the inning. Immaculata would get one run back in the top of the second when Sara Holleran scored on a fielder's choice to cut the Washington lead to 4-1.

Immaculata threatened in the top of the fourth, loading the bases with one out, but could not score. However, in the top of the fifth the Mighty Macs broke through with four runs to take a 5-4 lead. Holleran singled up the middle to cut the Washington lead to 4-2. The visitors cut the lead to 4-3 on a double by Carol Mastrosante. The Mighty Macs took a 5-4 lead on a two-run double down the left field line by Missy Hopely.

The Shorewomen got runners on the corners with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning when senior Kim Proctor (Ferndale, MD/Institute of Notre Dame) laced a single past the second baseman driving in Travers to tie the game and Russell scored the winning run all the way from first when the Immaculata right fielder had trouble fielding the ball. In the top of the seventh, the Mighty Macs got a runner on first, but could not tie the game and the hosts completed the sweep.

Senior pitcher Tricia Carroll (Owings Mills, MD/Owings Mills) picked up the victory in relief of sophomore hurler Caitlin McElroy (Bricktown, NJ/Brick Township). She improves to 1-0 on the season as she pitched 2 2/3 innings. Melissa Fetter tossed a complete game and took the loss, falling to 0-3.
