2007 CHESTER, PA -- Host Widener University swept visiting Washington College in a non-conference softball double-header on Thursday. The Pride (21-11) won game one, 3-2, in eight innings, and rallied to win game two, 7-4. The Shorewomen fell to 9-21 with the two losses. In the opener, Widener took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Krista Cesarine hit a two-run home run to left center field. The Shorewomen got a run back in the third when senior Beth Anne Hartman (Ellicott City, MD/Baltimore Lutheran) scored on a single by junior Megan Russell (Federalsburg, MD/Seaford Christian, DE). Washington tied the score in the top of the seventh as junior Amanda Campbell (Boothwyn, PA/Garnet Valley) homered to center field to lead off the inning. Hartman was placed on second to open the eighth inning due to the international tie-breaker rule. She advanced to third on a single by junior Irene Pastorino (Swarthmore, PA/Cardinal O'Hara). Widener pitcher Mallory Meyer threw a pitch past catcher Katie Mitchell during the next at bat and Hartman went for home, but Mitchell recovered the ball and threw is to Meyer who made the tag at home. Russell grounded out to end the inning. Rachel O'Leary was placed on second to open the bottom of the eighth for Widener. Carli Saraullo pinch-ran for O'Leary and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Cesarine. Kim Dougherty then drove in Saraullo for the winning run with a single to left center. Cesarine and Widener's Erin Kane were the only players to finish with two hits in the opener. Meyer allowed two runs on four hits and a walk, while striking out five batters in eight innings of work to get the win. Junior Tricia Carroll (Owings Mills, MD/Owings Mills) took the loss for Washington, allowing two earned runs on six hits and two walks. Meyer led off the bottom of the first in game two with a home run to give the Pride a quick 1-0 lead. Washington scored three runs in the third to pull ahead, 3-1. Junior Meg Travers (Huntingtown, MD/Calvert) doubled to left field and sophomore Meghan Luterzo (Hasbrouck Heights, NJ/St. Mary's) followed with a two-run home run to right field. Junior Amanda Campbell (Boothwyn, PA/Garnet Valley) and sophomore Emily Adams (Bethesda, MD/Bethesda-Chevy Chase) then hit back-to-back singles. Campbell scored on a fielding error by the Widener center fielder on Adams's single. The Shorewomen added a run in the fourth when Hartman doubled and later scored on a sacrifice fly by junior Kim Proctor (Ferndale, MD/Institute of Notre Dame) to make it 4-1. The Pride cut the lead to 4-2 when Meyer led off the bottom of the fifth with her second home run of the game. Widener tied the score in the bottom of the sixth when Kane and Caitlin Callahan scored on back-to-back fielder's choices and pulled ahead later in the inning as Elizabeth Kohan scored on a sacrifice fly by Ashlee Hutchins. Widener then made it 7-4 on a two-run single by O'Leary. O'Leary went 3-for-4 in game two, while Meyer and Callahan each had two hits. Kim Dougherty got the win in relief, allowing no runs on a hit and a walk in four innings of work. Campbell, Travers, and Adams each had two hits in the loss for the Shorewomen. The Shorewomen return to action Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. Centennial Conference double-header at Dickinson. |
