Bears Sweep Shorewomen
Travers Homers for WC in First Game

CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Visiting Ursinus College won both ends of a Centennial Conference double-header over host Washington College this afternoon in Chestertown. The Bears (17-5, 4-0 Centennial) won game one, 10-2, and rallied for a 4-3 victory in the second game.

Ursinus jumped on top in game one, scoring five runs in the top of the first inning and never looking back. Jennie Moore went 3-for-5 with a home run, three RBI, and a run scored in the opener, while Tracey Olson homered, scored two runs, and drove in a pair of runs. Mary Reid was 2-for-4 with two runs scored, while Sarah Hennessey was 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Mallory Greene got the win for the Bears, allowing two earned runs on seven hits and no walks. Junior Meg Travers (Huntingtown, MD/Calvert) hit a two-run home run in the game for the Shorewomen (8-14, 1-5), while junior Kim Proctor (Ferndale, MD/Institute of Notre Dame) was 2-for-3 with a double. Junior Tricia Carroll (Owings Mills, MD/Owings Mills) pitched the final four innings in relief for Washington, allowing two unearned runs on one hit and two walks.

The Bears took a 1-0 lead in the second game on a home run by Kaitlyn Sutherland in the top of the fourth inning. The Shorewomen pulled ahead in the bottom of the inning by plating three runs. Proctor drove in Travers with a single, sophomore Meghan Luterzo (Hasbrouck Heights, NJ/St. Mary's) scored on a ground out by junior Amanda Campbell (Boothwyn, PA/Garnet Valley), and Proctor scored on a single by junior Megan Russell (Federalsburg, MD/Seaford Christian, DE).

Ursinus rallied in the top of the sixth inning as Hennessey homered to left field to start the inning and cut the deficit to 3-2. Jessica Winterbottom then doubled. Stacy Zimmer pinch ran for Winterbottom, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and then scored on a ground out by Lindsay Davis to tie the score. Katie Gallagher hit a two-out double to left field to score Sara Williams for what would prove to be the game-winning run. Davis, who picked up the win by allowing five hits and no walks in seven innings, retired the final six Washington batters in order to finish the game. Moore and Erin McHugh each had two hits in the second game for Ursinus.

The Shorewomen return to action Friday when they host Catholic for a 3:00 p.m. non-conference twin bill.
