Shorewomen Are Level With Garnet
Proctor's 2-for-3 and 2 RBI Propels WC To Victory In Opener

CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Junior catcher Kim Proctor (Ferndale, MD/Inst. of Notre Dame) went 2-for-3 at the plate and drove in two runs as Washington College downed visting Swarthmore, 5-4, in the opening game of a Centennial Conference doubleheader to snap a nine-game losing streak on the campus of Washington College. The Garnet rebounded to take game two, 8-0.

In game one, the Shorewomen trailed 1-0 before scoring two runs to take a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third. With the bases loaded and two outs, Proctor singled up the middle to plate junior designated player Irene Pastorino (Swarthmore, PA/Cardinal O'Hara) and junior centerfielder Meg Travers (Huntingtown, MD/Calvert).

Washington (9-19, 2-8 CC) added three runs in the bottom of the sixth to make it 5-1. The Shorewomen got RBI from sophomore first baseman Emily Adams (Bethesda, MD/Bethesda-Chevy Chase), junior left fielder Tricia Carroll (Owings Mills, MD/Owings Mills) and Travers.

Swarthmore (16-8, 6-2 CC) scored three runs in the top of the seventh to cut the margin to 5-4. With two outs, Ashley Brandt doubled to centerfield to plate a run to make it 5-2. The Garnet cut it to 5-4 on a Shorewomen fielding error that allowed two runs to score. Junior pitcher Michelle Laque (Ocean Pines, MD/Stephen Decatur) came in to relieve freshman starting pitcher Caitlin McElroy (Bricktown, NJ/Brick Township) and got Melissa LaVan to ground out with the tying run on second to seal the deal.

McElroy picked up the victory to improve to 5-6 on the season and Laque chalked up her first save of 2007. McElroy allowed just five hits over 6 2/3 innings and walked just one batter, while striking out two. For the Garnet, Alexandra Zelaski took the loss and falls to 5-3.

Sophomore second baseman Meghan Luterzo (Hasbrouck Heights, NJ/St. Mary's) also pounded out two hits for the Shorewomen. For Swarthmore, Kathryn Riley had two hits and Christine Sendelsky scored twice.

In game two, Washington loaded the bases with one out, but Swarthmore pitcher Riley escaped the inning without allowing a run with a strike out and a pop out. The Garnet struck for four runs in the fourth inning. Riley gave Swarthmore a 1-0 lead on an RBI single to centerfield that plated Lauren Walker. Kelly Siano capped the rally with a three-run home run to left field to make it 4-0.

Swarthmore added two runs in the fifth and seventh innings to provide the final margin of 8-0.

Siano went 2-for-4 with four RBI and two runs scored in the nightcap. Michele Perch was 3-for-4 and plated two.

Riley tossed a complete game shutout for the Garnet, scattering three hits and fanning five. She is now 8-0 on the season. For the Shorewomen, Laque takes the loss and falls to 0-3.

Washington returns to action on Thursday with a 4:00 p.m. non-conference road doubleheader at Widener.
