2007 KISSIMMEE, FL -- The Washington College softball team split a pair of games with Benedictine at the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, FL, this morning. Benedictine won the first game, 5-1, but the Shorewomen (2-8) bounced back to take the second game, 3-0. Freshman Caitlin McElroy (Bricktown, NJ/Brick Township) threw a complete-game shutout for Washington in the second game. Benedictine scored in the first inning of game one when Aimee Mahoney tripled and scored on an error. The Eagles added another run in the third as Nikki Schlagel tripled and scored on a wild pitch. Benedictine pushed the lead to 3-0 in the fifth when Mahoney singled in Blair Erickson. Erickson drove in Kristin Bonk with a single in the sixth to make it 4-0. Bonk drove in Mahoney with a single in the seventh to provide the Eagles' final run. Washington got on the board in the bottom of the seventh when junior Meg Travers (Huntingtown, MD/Calvert) doubled in junior Irene Pastorino (Swarthmore, PA/Cardinal O'Hara). Bonk finished the game 3-for-4 for Benedictine in the opener, while Mahoney and Erickson each went 2-for-3. Melissa Kennedy picked up the win for Benedictine, allowing seven hits and two walks, while striking out 12 batters in seven innings. Junior Amanda Campbell (Boothwyn, PA/Garnet Valley) went 2-for-2 with a double and a walk in the loss for the Shorewomen, while Pastorino was 2-for-3 at the plate. Washington took a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning of the second game as Campbell doubled in sophomore Meghan Luterzo (Hasbrouck Heights, NJ/St. Mary's) and junior Tricia Carroll (Owings Mills, MD/Owings Mills) drove in junior Kim Proctor (Ferndale, MD/Institute of Notre Dame) with a single. The Shorewomen added a run in the sixth inning when sophomore Emily Adams (Bethesda, MD/Bethesda-Chevy Chase) scored on a ground out by Carroll. Senior Beth Anne Hartman (Ellicott City, MD/Baltimore Lutheran) was 2-for-4 with a double in the second game for Washington. Mahoney, who tripled, and Bonk, each went 2-for-3 for Benedictine in game two. McElroy allowed no runs on six hits and two walks in seven innings. The Shorewomen finish play at the Rebel Spring Games Friday, facing Suffolk and Coast Guard at 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., respectively. |
