Shorewomen Split with Fords
Washington Takes First Game in Eight Innings

HAVERFORD, PA -- The Washington College softball team opened its Centennial Conference scheduled Thursday by splitting a double-header with host Haverford College. The Shorewomen (8-10, 1-1 Centennial) won game one, 4-3, in eight innings, but the Fords (13-7, 3-1) held on for a 7-6 win in the second game.

Haverford held a 2-0 lead in the opener before Washington junior Meg Travers (Huntingtown, MD/Calvert) scored on an RBI single by sophomore Emily Adams (Bethesda, MD/Bethesda-Chevy Chase) in the top of the sixth inning. Washington pulled ahead, 3-2, in the top of the seventh when senior Beth Anne Hartman (Ellicott City, MD/Baltimore Lutheran) and freshman Jasmine Queen (Churchton, MD/Southern) scored on an RBI single by sophomore Meghan Luterzo (Hasbrouck Heights, NJ/St. Mary's).

The Fords knotted the score at 3-3 in the bottom of the inning when Dana Irshay scored on a ground out by Natalie Richman. Washington scored what would prove to be the game-winning run with no outs in the top of the eighth when junior Amanda Campbell (Boothwyn, PA/Garnet Valley) scored from second on an error during a bunt attempt by junior Tricia Carroll (Owings Mills, MD/Owings Mills). Haverford got runners on second and third with two outs in the bottom of the eighth, but Carroll got the final two batters to pop up to end the game.

Luterzo and Campbell each had two hits, including a double, for the Shorewomen in the opener. Carroll got the win in the circle, allowing one run on three walks and no hits in two and two-thirds innings. Junior Michelle Laque (Ocean Pines, MD/Stephen Decatur) started the game, allowing two runs, one of them earned, in five and one-third innings. Taylor Zavadsky was 2-for-2 with two walks for Haverford in the opener.

Haverford held a 7-1 lead in game two before the top of the seventh inning when the Shorewomen plated five runs on an RBI single by junior Kim Proctor (Ferndale, MD/Institute of Notre Dame) and two-run doubles by Campbell and Carroll. Samantha Fontinell preserved the win for Haverford by retiring the final batter with the potential game-tying run on second base.

Cassandra Searls was 2-for-4 with two doubles, two RBI, and a run scored for the Fords in the second game. Irshay and Allison Frank each finished 2-for-4 at the plate with an RBI and a run scored for Haverford. Carroll was 3-for-3 for the Shorewomen, while Proctor was 2-for-4.

The Shorewomen return to action Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. Centennial Conference double-header at McDaniel.
