2007 CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Kat Ager plated three runs in the first game and Kerry Convery had three RBI in the second game as Catholic University of America swept Washington College in a non-conference doubleheader on Friday afternoon on the campus of Washington College. The Cardinals won opener, 11-5, and captured the nightcap, 5-2. In the opening game, Catholic (15-15) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in its half of the first inning, before the Shorewomen scored four in their half to take a 4-3 lead. Junior Kim Proctor (Ferndale, MD/Institute of Notre Dame), who went 2-for-3 in the game, got Washington (8-16) on the scoreboard with an RBI single down the left field line. Junior Amanda Campbell (Boothwyn, PA/Garnet Valley) trimmed the lead to 3-2 on a fielder's choice. Junior Megan Russell (Federalsburg, MD/Seaford Christian (DE)) gave the hosts a 4-3 lead on an two-run single through the right side. Russell was 2-for-3 in the game with three RBI. Catholic would regain the lead in the top of the second on a double by Kaite Trotta that drove in two and gave the Cardinals a 5-4 lead. Ager capped the inning with an RBI single to right field to make it 6-4. Catholic led 8-4 in the bottom of the third when Russell drove in her third run of the game on an RBI single to make it 8-5, but that was as close as Washington would get. The Cardinals added three runs in the top of the sixth for the final margin. Elyse Papianni went the distance for Catholic and improves to 7-7 on the season. For the Shorewomen, sophomore Emily Adams (Bethesda, MD/Bethesda-Chevy Chase) took the loss and falls to 2-7. In the second game, Convery snapped a scoreless tie in the top of the third with a three-run home run to straight-away centerfield to give Catholic a 3-0 lead. The Cardinals added a run each in the fourth and fifth innings to give the guests a 5-0 lead. Washington scored its two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning when junior Tricia Carroll (Owings Mills, MD/Owings Mills) hit a two-run single to right field to cut the deficit to 5-2 to cap the scoring. Catholic's Stephanie Clemente recorded the win and improves to 6-8. She struck out six and scattered four hits in tossing a complete game. Washington freshman Caitlin McElroy (Bricktown, NJ/Brick Township) also pitched a complete game, but was on the short end of the decision and falls to 4-5 The Shorewomen resume Centennial Conference play tomorrow with a 12:00 p.m. twinbill at Muhlenberg. |
