April 2,
2007 CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Junior Kim Proctor (Ferndale, MD/Institue of Notre Dame) and fellow classmate Meg Travers (Huntingtown, MD/Calvert) each hit a home run in both games as Washington College swept visiting Baruch College, 9-4 and 5-3 respectively, on Monday afternoon on the campus of Washington College. The Shorewomen improve to 7-9 on the season, while the Bearcats slip to 3-7. In game one, Travers socked her first career home run to centerfield in the bottom of the first inning to give Washington a 1-0 lead. Junior Irene Pastorino (Swarthmore, PA/Cardinal O'Hara) gave the hosts a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second on a single up the middle. In the bottom of the third, Proctor launched a long ball to left-center to give Washington a 4-0 lead. After Baruch cut the deficit to 4-2, the Shorewomen scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth, all with two outs, to take an 8-2 lead. The rally was capped by a double down the left field line by junior Megan Russell (Federalsburg, MD/Seaford Christian (DE)). The Bearcats cut it to 8-4 in the top of the sixth with two runs, but in the bottom of the sixth, junior Amanda Campbell (Boothwyn, PA/Garnet Valley) registered an RBI double to cap the scoring. Sophomore Emily Adams (Bethesda, MD/Bethesda-Chevy Chase) went the distance, allowing seven hits and striking out three to improve to 2-4. For the visitors, Ally Stamatiades took the loss. In the second game, after Baruch pitcher Melissa Mejia had retired the first 10 batters she faced, Travers blasted a home run over the centerfield wall to give the Shorewomen a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth. In the next inning, Washington scored two runs with the help of two Bearcat errors. Campbell scored on a Russell single and junior Tricia Carroll (Owings Mills, MD/Owings Mills) scored when a Baruch player dropped the ball. Baruch cut the deficit to 3-2 when Idelissa Lluveres hit a two-run home run to right-center in the top of the sixth. The Shorewomen answered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the frame. Proctor led off the inning with her second home run of the doubleheader and Adams scored on a double by Russell. The Bearcats scored one in the top of the seventh, to cut it to 5-3, and had the tying run on base, but Sonia Sendoya popped up to sophomore second baseman Meghan Luterzo (Hasbrouck Heights, NJ/St. Mary's) to end it. Freshman Caitlin McElroy (Bricktown, NJ/Brick Township) picked up the victory in the nightcap and improves to 4-3 on the season. She allowed just six hits and fanned two. Mejia took the loss for the Bearcats. The Shorewomen open Centennial Conference play Thursday with a 3:00 p.m. twinbill at visiting Haverford. |
